Happiness at Work Starts with Me
People may define happiness at work differently some will point to pay and benefits while others focus on flexibility or remote work. Very rarely does one consider their role in finding happiness at work.
Your happiness whether at work or in life begins with you. Your expectations and response to situations will say a lot about how happy you are in a position.
If you are unhappy in your current job, ask yourself these three questions.
1. What were my expectations of this job?
2. What would I rather be doing at this moment?
3. What type of work really makes me happy?
Job mismatch is a significant reason why many people are miserable with what they are doing. As a result, they are doing a disservice to themselves, their coworkers, and their employers.
As before mentioned, expectations have a significant impact on happiness at work. This should be obvious since, if the position or company falls short of expectations you feel cheated. Temper your expectations when starting anything new. Don’t let hype from others give you a false sense of grandiosity.
Additionally, your response to a situation whether good or bad will impact you and those around you. We all know that individual who constantly panics when priorities change, or the deadline is approaching.
If this is you, the anxiety you add to the situation serves no benefit to you or those around you. It increases the stress level and the chance that something will be missed.
Taking things into perspective really helps those who find the sky is always falling. First, deal with those things that you can control. Next, ask for help with those things you need others to do. Finally, let the process take its course.
One of my motto is, everything is a process. Treat it as such that you quickly see that you can accomplish more when you are calm. Yeah, there will be times when the adrenaline will kick in, but you will be able to take hold of the situation and bring things back into perspective.
If you are not happy at work the first thing is to evaluate yourself. Identify your expectations of the job. Be brutally honest with yourself about what you would rather be doing. Speak to the kind of work that makes you happy. Once you have done these things you will have a true idea of why you are not happy. Now it’s time to change the situation and make yourself happy.
Don’t be fooled, sometimes for you to achieve happiness you’ll have to say goodbye.
